If you dictate a lot, the real question is what to reach for. An idea that arrives on a walk is not the same problem as a reply box sitting open on your Mac. Whisper Memos and Dictato were built for those two moments.
What Whisper Memos is built for
Its headline is exact: “Record a voice memo, receive it as email.” You record on iPhone or Apple Watch, hands free “by tapping a complication or action button”, and a formatted email comes back; the Watch app “works standalone”. Recordings run up to 90 minutes, and offline memos upload when you are back online. What arrives is “a nicely formatted email with automatic paragraphs and your summary”, shaped by your own instructions, and it routes onward to integrations including Notion, Todoist and Zapier. It claims “Over 50 languages”. For capturing a long thought away from a desk, it does that job well.
Where Dictato fits
Dictato is a Mac app. You hold a hotkey, speak, and the text is typed into the app you are in, any app that accepts a paste, once you grant the macOS Accessibility permission. Nothing arrives by email: the words are in the document. That live-typing contrast also runs through Dictato compared with Rev.
Numbers, dates, times, currency, percentages and phone numbers are converted to written form by rule on your Mac, on every dictation, with no setup, in English and French. Punctuation, commas, capitals and paragraphs are a separate on-device AI step that runs only once you switch on Auto-correct or set a per-app profile, which needs a one-time download of roughly 3.4 GB. Paragraphs cut where the topic changes, not where you pause. With that step off, filler and duplicate words are still removed by rule.
The line, stated plainly
Dictato has no audio-file import and no iPhone app. It cannot turn an existing voice memo or audio file into text. If that is your job, Dictato does not do it at all.
The other difference is the audio path. Whisper Memos’ privacy policy states: “To transcribe audio files, our app utilizes the OpenAI’s whisper model. This entails transmitting your audio file to OpenAI.” It keeps data “only for the duration required to offer you the intended service”, with a private mode that deletes the transcript after delivery. In Dictato, transcription, correction and translation run on your Mac, so your voice and your words never leave it. The app still reaches the network for licence checks, a one-time model download, update checks, a feedback form you fill in, and, during the free trial, anonymous usage counters that carry no transcript, no audio and no free text, switchable off, stopped once you buy. Two different bills
At the time of writing, Whisper Memos publishes $9.99 per month or $69.99 per year, and says it is free to try. Dictato is one payment of 19.99 EUR, lifetime, updates included, no account. The counterweight: one Mac at a time, a limited number of moves per month, and moving back to a Mac you used before counts as a move. The maths is in subscriptions versus buying once.
